Sighthill is a area in the city of Glasgow. It is situated north of the River Clyde. In the past Sighthill was included as part of Greater Springburn. The area is bordered to the East by the Springburn Bypass road and the to West by the Glasgow to Edinburgh via Falkirk Line running into Queen Street Station. The district is primarily residential, consisting of ten 20 storey tower blocks, five storey deck access blocks and some single and two storey houses. Designed by Crudens Ltd, the scheme was built between 1964 and 1969 on the 'Soda Waste'. This was derelict ground on which Charles Tennant's St.Rollox Chemical Works, at one time the largest chemical manufacturer in the world, used to dump waste chemicals until its closure in 1964. Sighthill cemetery opened in 1840 and within it stands the memorial to John Baird and Andrew Hardie, the leaders of the 1820 Radical War otherwise known as the 1820 Insurrection. |
